Up until 2003, there was still a herd of wild horses in the Anza-Borrego state park, specifically up in Coyote Canyon. I can reach Coyote Canyon from the Anza side by dirt road. I haven't been down much of that dirt road (I keep promising myself that SOMEDAY I'll rent a 4x4 for the weekend and do some off-road exploring!), but I've driven out on it a way. The horse ranch owner's husband just spent last weekend at the Coyote Canyon horse facility and did a 3 day ride there. You can actually drive out to Borrego Springs, go out to Coyote Canyon, and ride up into Anza.
Anyway, as I was saying, up until 2003, Anza-Borrego did have a herd of wild horses. I read the letter from the park superintendent regarding their roundup. It was a time of severe drought and the herd was down to a couple dozen horses who were thin and had ribs showing. There were rounded up and sent to a ranch with pasture up in one of the Dakotas, on Indian land, I believe...
But, the park DOES have metal sculptures of wild horses, along with other ancient animals like mammoths, snakes, and even dinosaurs! We didn't see the dinosaurs this trip, but we did come upon the horses. They are quite interesting, don't you think? I'd like to return and spend a day in Anza-Borrego (if hubby would just let me!)

I was getting excited when I read your title! We are in Borrego Springs and I instantly decided we would see them today. But my bubble burst! whaaaa
Wild Horses...I use to dream of wild horses. Now I dream of birds. But every one in awhile the old love of horses takes wing in my heart again.
I am happy to hear they are taking good care of the horses. The sculptures are cool!
Love Anza-Borrego (in the winter time). Hope to be there for at least a couple of weeks before it gets too hot.
