Twin Lakes, Mammoth, CA

 Beautiful grasses in the forest.

There were actually 3 of them.  One isn't in frame.

Nice fall colors up by Mammoth.

The view from the overlook.  Those are the Twin Lakes below.
Lots of ducks on one of the Twin Lakes...

Our next short trip was up through the Twin Lakes region above Mammoth.  Since we were staying in Mammoth for 4 nights, we just made a short excursion through this area to check out the fall colors.  We drove up Old Mammoth Road and saw 3 deer right away!  I went back up this road several more times, but I didn't see any deer again.  It is such a beautiful area!  If you drive up by Lake Mary, you can stop at the overlook and see the twin lakes.  There is a waterfall there, but it wasn't as big as we have seen it in the past.  Hopefully this week's storms will bring some snow to Mammoth.

Good Fences~October 14, 2016~Virginia Lakes Road fence

Hubby and I took a drive up Lundy Canyon one afternoon.  We had not been up there before in the autumn and it was WELL worth the extra time.  I believe it was the morning we drove from Bishop to South Lake Tahoe.

My goodness!  The colors were amazing!  Leaves had fallen off many of the trees due to the storm which moved through the area the previous day, but there was still a lot of color on them.  And, there were quite a few other people with cameras already up there.

I always love to stop and take photos of western fences and this one was interesting, don't you think?  If I remember correctly, this is on the Virginia Lakes road.  We didn't head up that far up the road that day because by then I was tired and I still had a 2 hour drive ahead.

Bishop Canyon

I couldn't find my photos from Bishop Canyon, which was our first afternoon adventure last week.  I uploaded them and hubby stuck them in another folder, so that explains the mystery!

The afternoon was mostly clear when we started up the canyon, but two hours later, storm clouds were hanging on the mountains and it was downright CHILLY!  The storm ended up dumping snow on Reno, Nevada.

Here are some photos from Bishop Canyon.  Sorry about the lighting.  As I said, storm clouds were moving in and it got pretty dark.

This is a large meadow up in Bishop Creek.
This is actually on the road to Lake Sabrina...obviously a favorite spot of photographers!

The approaching storm!  It came up over us in less than one hour!
Brrrrrr!  Sierra storms can be very cold!

Eastern Sierra/Tahoe trip

Hubby and I planned a trip to the eastern Sierra this year, since we are now BOTH retired.  We tried doing it one year, a few years ago, when we were both working.  I had to use 2 of my 10 sick days and back them up to a weekend, but, with 1 day for driving each way, we were both exhausted.

And, we had to take the dog with us this time.  We can't even leave her overnight.  She gets separation anxiety and tears down whatever fence she can, so we HAD to take her with us.

We spent most of the summer researching places to stay.  Hubby found a cabin in Mammoth through Air B&B, so he booked it for 4 nights.  He found another dog friendly one up in South Lake Tahoe, so he booked it.  Then, we had to find a motel in Bishop (the Vagabond) that allowed dogs for the one night going and coming home.  The Vagabond actually worked out really well.  They have a dog park in the back of the motel, complete with doggy bags and a fenced, grassy area.  It was perfect!  The Tahoe cabin was newly remodeled, and it had a courtyard, but it wasn't completely fenced.  I'll put links to each of the cabins at the end of this post so you can check them out.  I will say that both hostesses were very cooperative.

We left Sunday, October 2nd, for our 8 night trip.  The first night we stayed in Bishop and, since it was the first time traveling with Ripley, our 9 year old black lab, we made plenty of stops along the way.  It took me... 7 HOURS to get there.  Normally it is about a 4 hour drive.  I honestly don't know why it took so long...We did detour and drive through the Alabama Hills, but that was our only detour.

The next morning we only had to drive to Mammoth, so we drove up through Bishop Canyon and Lundy Canyon.  The colors there were spectacular!  I'll end this post there, for today.

There is a Denny's right next door and the Schatz' Bakery is just down the street.

I'll have to exit this and go to my Gmail account to get the addresses for the 2 cabins!

Okay...here is the link to the Mammoth cabin:    https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/7953449?

Just be aware...this cabin does NOT have a fenced yard and the hostess has 3 dogs herself, who are frequently outside.  There are coyotes and bears in Mammoth.  I finally got Ripley used to the place after 2 days and I was able to let her go off leash, but I stayed with her.  There was a ferocious dog in the house behind the cabin, too.  I would NOT let your dog off leash, alone, up in Mammoth!  Ripley, our lab, doesn't like to do her... business... on a leash, but I always stayed right with her and she was fine.

Having experienced two Air B&B cabins now, I would DEFINITELY either email the host or call them myself and ask the questions that I needed to have answered.  Hubby booked both of these and I don't think he realized they did NOT have a fenced yard.  The Tahoe one was okay for the dog, but the Mammoth cabin was a little scary.  I took an early morning drive one day and heard a coyote howling just 1/4 mile away from the cabin.  I never saw a bear, but the hostess did tell me they DO come down to the cabin and she had bear proof trash bins.  Just something to consider...

Different fences~Wildlands Conservacy

At another large apple ranch, Los Rios, lies one of the Wildlands Conservacy areas.  The Whitewater Preserve is also a part of the conservacy.  This one, at Los Rios, is only about a year old.  I remember visiting it last fall with our daughter and then 2 year old granddaughter.  They had just planted the butterfly garden.

When hubby and I arrived there a couple days ago, I wanted to take the hike and explore beyond the gardens, so off I went.  Hubby, unfortunately, was huffing and puffing and soon went back to sit in the car.  He REALLY needs to get off his duff and do some walking!  I could never keep up with his stride (he is 6'...I'm 5'5")...but now I'm always out in front of him!

We did make it past the apple orchard and found ourselves in a grove of sequoias, cedars, and redwoods!  It was amazing!  I had NO IDEA it was even there.  It was so much cooler inside the grove!  I'll be sure and take our daughter and granddaughter there next time.  I need to get the grandson up there, too, although he has been to Yosemite.

Here are some photos from the Wildlands Conservacy at Oak Glen.

 I LOVE these wild sunflowers!
 Yes, dark clouds were overhead!

LOVE this graceful arch.  The apple orchard was behind it.

WARNING!  They have a list of animals spotted and a rattlesnake was spotted two days before we arrived on the trail!
At one point, hubby wandered ahead...

Entering the sequoia and redwood grove...

There is a nice picnic area here, too.

Return to Oak Glen ~ GOOD FENCES~ October 1, 2016

Hubby wanted to drive to Oak Glen (about a 45 minute drive) yesterday and the clouds were perfect, so off we went.  He wanted to have lunch at Laws Cafe and Restaurant and buy an apple pie to bring home.

There were some real DARK patches of clouds, but that added to the enjoyment of the day.  We could see sprinkles off in the distance and the clouds were gathering over the mountains.

Of course, we stopped back at Riley's Farm.  We were there two weeks ago, but in the late afternoon and their restaurant/bakery was closing.  Yesterday we got there in the morning, about 10 a.m. (before the crowds).  Hubby went one way and I went another.  It was good just to have the time to stop and look and admire.

 Beautifully maintained white fences...

Lots of old rock fences, too.
 Rock fence and white fence...

Rock fence and roses...

By the time we were ready to leave, we could look across the valley and see RAIN coming down!  I'm glad we had the opportunity to visit Oak Glen again.  I bought a bag of Spartan apples up there and we'll be eating them!

Sierra Nevada

Hubby and I are planning a trip to the eastern Sierra Nevada in a couple of weeks.  We really haven't had a chance to go there and see the fall colors until this year.  We did take a 4 day trip back in 2011, however, and I posted some of those photos below.  I took 2 days off school and backed them up to a weekend, so we had a 4 day trip.  One day to drive up there, 2 days to explore, and 1 day to drive back home and then go to work the next day.

Ugh.

Not this year, however.  This year we are both RETIRED!  And, we have nothing but time to explore and relax and take photos.

I'm watching the reports on Facebook from the Mono County Tourism bureau and the Eastern Sierra site for their color reports.  The higher elevations have a lot of color right now, but the lower ones are just starting to get some color.  It should be PERFECT by the time we get there!

These are some photos from our 2011 trip:
