Horse visit

I drove up to the ranch where I board my horses Saturday, since I didn't get up there over Easter weekend.  Just too many family things to do and it was our granddaughter's 2nd birthday weekend.  So, they hadn't been out for some R&R for 2 weeks.  I could tell.  Scout was...well...she was TYPICAL Scout!  She led down to the arena just fine, but, once there, she wanted to RUN!  I could barely contain her!  I took Gigondas, my big red thoroughbred mare, over to a large corral next to the 30 year old gelding who is her neighbor.  There is plenty of room there for her to run and he doesn't have to call to her and get all upset.  Next, I took Lucille, my 1/2 draft, 1/2 Tennessee Walker mare, over to the tie rack to brush her.  And brush her...and brush her!  Boy, does she have a LOT of hair!  She's got the most hair of all my horses.  Next weekend I'm going to have to ask the owner to show me how to trim her "beard" and leg hair.  They all got their feet trimmed while we were on vacation and I don't even worry about their behavior now.  They've been trimmed so many times by the same farrier that they just stand and think, "Ho hum" while he trims them.  He also sings to them, so they are pretty relaxed!

Here are some photos I took Saturday of the horses.  I know some readers enjoy hearing about them...

Lucille's hair after I brushed her.
LOOK at all of this!  My goodness!
Scout running in the arena.  She's my mustang from Wyoming.
All 4 feet off the ground!  I'm not confident enough to EVER ride Scout!  She needs a more experienced rider!
Quad, my off-the-track thoroughbred gelding, a descendant of Man O'War, Secretariat, and Affirmed.  Out of 7 races, he never won, so he was shipped off the track.  Fortunately he went to a rescue instead of slaughter and I got him from the rescue.  I don't ride him either.
Sunni, my first horse.  Sunni is a PMU (pregnant mare urine) gelding.  His mother was tied in a stall and her urine was collected for PREMARIN.  He is the unwanted by-product.  Again, fortunately, he was saved by a rescue instead of going to slaughter.  He's half draft, half quarter horse.  I could ride Sunni, if I wanted, but, at my age, why bother?
This is Lucille back in May, 2014.  She's got a beautiful color, when you can see it and she isn't all woolly!  She's the only one of my horses that I ride.  She's VERY calm and patient.
Another photo of Lucille last summer.
This is Gigondas, my big red thoroughbred mare.  She WAS on a slaughter-bound feedlot when I saw her photo back in 2006.  I adopted her through an online site and she was shipped to California from Washington state.  She had real trust issues with people, but now she's very trusting.  I don't ride her.  She's just too unpredictable.  She wouldn't intentionally hurt me, but I don't wish to put her through the trauma of riding her.  She gets to live out her years peacefully.

Kelso train depot

We returned home via the Mojave Preserve and the Kelso depot.  If you haven't stopped there, be sure you do go out of your way to visit it!  What a treasure in the desert!  Two military trains went by, different directions, while we were there and the trains tooted as they passed.  There is a gift shop and many exhibits to see while you are there and nice, CLEAN restrooms!  (That's always a bonus for me!)  Just be aware that the road to and from Kelso is...er...a bit bumpy, with MANY, many potholes!  I was concerned because hubby's XTerra needs new tires, but we made it home okay.  We did stop at Roy's Motel in Amboy, but I didn't take any photos.  Hubby leaned out his window and took a few.  I was more concerned about getting home and checking on the dog, cats, and birds.  The birds (wild birds outside) hadn't had any food since we left on Monday and it was now Friday.  They are back in full force this morning, enjoying their COSTCO birdseed!   :-)  While a trip is always nice, it's always good to be home again!  :-)

Are WE the last generation...

Hubby and I were having a conversation last night after dinner at our son's place.  He's taking a new job and moving up north to Loomis, but will commute home on weekends.  This will be hard on him, especially with a 6 year old son and a 4 month old daughter.  I worry about him...

Anyway, hubby asked this question:  "Are we the last generation to THINK?"  Huh?  Both of our children, now in their mid-30's ARE critical thinkers and we are proud of them for that.  I'm a late "baby boomer", since I was born in 1952.  Hubby was born in 1950.  However, we both went to the University of California and we BOTH grew up during the Vietnam War.  But, our generation WAS the one to say, "HELL NO, WE WON'T GO!" during that time.  We BOTH lived through the assassination of President Kennedy, as well as that of his brother, and of Martin Luther King.  We both watched the Watts riots.  We BOTH worked as campaign workers in 1972...yes, for Nixon.  BUT, we are both independents and independent thinkers.  That often gets HIM in trouble at work and it occasionally gets ME in trouble at my school.  I only have a couple of years left to teach, so I'm at the point I really don't CARE if I'm in trouble or not, and he is 65, so he doesn't care anyway, and frankly, he doesn't suffer fools AT ALL.

But, I look at the students I'm teaching today and I wonder, "HOW in tarnation are these kids going to make it?"  They don't CARE about anything.  They don't care that they can't read or write.  I sit with them and give them strategies, but, as the old saying goes, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."  They prefer just to SIT and do NOTHING. I guess it is easier that way than having to actually THINK?  I had parent conferences a couple of weeks ago and not one parent, out of the 17 that came (that's 17 out of 26!) questioned anything I said.  NOT ONE.   Hmmmm.....that's troubling in itself.  And, I did talk about reading with the parents.  A couple were concerned, but the rest couldn't be bothered.  And, NO, they don't have books at home for their kids to read and NO, the don't have Internet access either, or a computer or tablet so that their kid can practice reading books online. OYE VEI!  "Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers." — Harry S Truman

Their indifference shows up in their writing.  'Cuz instead of because is frequently seen.  OYE VEI!  Don't even get me started on their, there, and they're.  I've given up TRYING to teach those!  If I make an assignment, the first question is..."HOW many sentences do we HAVE to write?"  Well, gosh, darn, I don't know...maybe a FULL PARAGRAPH?

Lazy, lazy, lazy...indifferent...callous...how else can I describe them?

A friend of mine, a few years ago, did a survey of her class.  She asked them, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"  One girl answered, "I want to be on welfare and have LOTS of babies."  REALLY?  You do?  You WANT government support?  You WANT to be lazy?  Gosh, that's inspiring!

Every day hubby has to deal with "corporate drones".  I see future "corporate drones" in my classroom.  These are the kids who don't question ANYTHING.  PERIOD.

I fear for our country and I fear for our grandchildren, that they will be a part of this.  THEY won't be drones, not if we can prevent it.  But, what about the other 99.999%?

And, now I worry about natural resources.  WILL there be enough to support our grandchildren and their generation?  Will there be enough water?  Food?  Housing?

What about you?  Do you worry about the future?

I wrote this at 2 a.m. this morning...Reading through it again, I want to add one thing:  While at UC Riverside, I took a class, "The History of Science".  It was the hardest class I EVER took, and I took statistics while in college.  My professor (yes, a FULL professor) was Dr. Tobey.  HE made me think.  He taught me how to write.  I had 3 quarters of that course and 3 quarters of Dr. Tobey.  Sometimes I cried.  I often spent days and nights rewriting my papers and cursing him.  BUT...I came out of that class a much better person and a highly qualified writer and thinker.  Thank you, Dr. Tobey!

Looking back at our Vegas trip...

I could live there...hubby, too.  Not IN Las Vegas, but in the suburbs around it.  A move to Nevada would save me $900 a MONTH in taxes when I retire!  YES, California will tax my retirement THAT MUCH!!!

We saw some really nice horses ranches out past Summerlin.  VERY NICE!  And, who wouldn't love that view of the red mountains?  There temps there aren't that much different than ours and they seem to have WATER!  of course, with all the development going on, that might change in the future.  We didn't even bother driving out to Lake Mead because one of the rangers at Red Rock Canyon was telling people that it is so low, there's nothing to see in some spots!  That's a real shame.  I certainly hope California can figure out the water situation here.  We NEED farmers.  We NEED water.  We don't need to waste water on golf courses (just my opinion), but, on the other hand, cities need the tourism bucks.  Right now the Coachella music festival is in full swing and every hotel from here to Palm Springs is booked.

Changing subjects, I heard coyotes howling this morning.  Now, that's something I haven't heard in YEARS!  And, Ripley, our black lab (who I suspect is part coyote...) answered them!  YIKES!  There is a storm drain/wash system about 3/4 of a mile from our house and coyotes have used that route for years.  But, I haven't heard them in the mornings or at night for many, many years.  AND, a flock of geese just flew over our house, heading north.  I could hear them honking, so Al & Kelly, look for my friends, will you?

Just a few photos to brighten up your day.  I'm heading up to the horses today.  I need to buy bags of pellets to supplement their alfalfa, so I'll have to...er... clean out the back of my Honda CRV!

 Red rocks..
 Pretty view...
I love the shadows on the mountains!
Darn pretty up there!  This is from the Springs Mountain ranch area...

Bellagio water show

Now, THIS I liked!  It was set to waltz music and I could have stayed there all afternoon and evening!  However, hubby wanted to get to the Eiffel Tower spot (across the street), so we had to march 2 blocks up, then over Las Vegas Blvd.  Along the way (because of my heart valve), I had to stop and sit down!  Too many steps, too many stairs, too many people.

Late afternoon walk in downtown Las Vegas

Definitely NOT my cup of tea, although we did see some interesting buildings.  TOO many people.  TOO many people shoving cards of topless women our way!  (They didn't even look to see who they were shoving them at!)  Too many crowds.  Too many casinos.  Ugh.  I couldn't wait to get back to the hotel!

I WILL post photos of the water show at the Bellagio, which I really enjoyed.  It was set to a nice waltz and I happily clicked away!

Planes at Las Vegas airport

Hubby attended his convention yesterday and was quite pleased with it.  While he was there, I didn't wish to return to the hotel and deal with valet parking and then going back up to the 10th floor of the hotel, so I drove down past the Las Vegas Clark County airport.  Man, that is a BUSY airport!  I think a plane either landed or took off every 30 seconds.  I parked my car in the shade first at the Whole Foods, then I ventured across Las Vegas Blvd. to the sports center and found a quiet shady spot and watched them land and take off.  I finally got the nerve to drive down the full length of the airport.  It seemed to me that the domestic planes landed on one strip, while the international flights landed at a right angle to them.  Is this correct?  Southwest, Alaska, and some prop planes landed near the Whole Foods, while United, Delta, and some other airline landed at the far side of the airport.

Here are some photos I took for you plane buffs!   :-)  A couple of them came in literally right over my head!  I liked the prop one.  Maybe somebody can identify the types of planes?  The Southwest ones were vividly painted...

I couldn't see the name of the one above...
 Jet Blue...
 Southwest...
Don't know which airline this one is...

 I LOVED this prop plane...
 Another Southwest
Alaska air...
