These are blossoms on a cholla cactus. Or are they the fruit? I really don't know! These darn things are EVERYWHERE and if you don't wear hiking boots, LOOK OUT! I wear hiking boots and believe me, my boots have been covered with cholla spines, especially in Arizona, near the Superstition Mountains! These are also called "jumping cholla" because the vibrations of a passing animal or human make the cholla spikes "jump" onto whatever poor creature walks by. I'm very careful about where I put my boots and one time, in the Superstition mountains, hubby informed me that my boots were COVERED with these little evil things! So, BEWARE! Those look like last year's fruit to me; or are those truly flower buds? You have a couple of those "jumping chollas" out there...Teddy Bear Cholla is THE meanest! My calves hurt at the memory...
ReplyDeleteSorry that the list isn't working...Mclinky is not free anymore, so my account got deactivated when they changed their stuff...
ReplyDeleteNeat picture! :)
Looks like the flower and fruit have passed. Those jumping chollas are dangerous.
ReplyDeleteI had not idea cactus spines could jump! OUCH! Lovely photo.
ReplyDeleteWhoooie...yeah, I know about those evil jumping chollas! You were brave to get so close!
ReplyDeleteLooks like those are the fruit of the cholla. The flowers are frilly and ruffly and the buds would have a little pointed ends on them. From what I have heard, the javalina eat those fruit! Nice photo and you are right about them: Ouch!
ReplyDeleteYup, I think anyone that has been in AZ knows about these devils! Great shot, those spines look so much like needles.
ReplyDelete❤HCM❤
This is so unusual!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous capture!
If I ever make it to AZ, I'll be sure to be mindful! Nice photo! ~karen
